Santa Barbara

I just spent a few fun-filled days in Santa Barbara with my sister Tor! It was a blast: mostly we pampered ourselves with manicures and pedicures, hair cuts, shopping, and lots of good food! But we also used some spare time to work out in the warm southern California sun. She plays varsity lacrosse on her high school team, and had a bunch of spring break workouts to do. I figured I’d join in–how hard could it be, right? WRONG!
Typically my workouts last anywhere from 45-90 minutes. If I’m short on time I’ll work out for 30 minutes, but I’m pretty accustomed to longer workouts. So when she described her 30 minute interval run I thought no problem! Here’s how it goes:
Tor’s Cardio-Blast Lax Team 30-min Workout
5 min warm-up jog
1 min sprint
1 min recovery jog
30 sec sprint
30 sec recovery jog
30 sec sprint
1.5 min recovery jog
REPEAT that sequence FOUR times in a row
5 min cool-down jog
Now, I run fairly regularly, but I rarely sprint–except the last stretch sometimes, certainly in a race. We decided to take advantage of our location and bring this workout to the beach–barefoot in the sand. The whole thing took only 30 minutes, but those sprints really build up! And even in recovery you’re still running, albeit slower. By the end, I couldn’t finish the 1 minute sprints at full-speed. Oh well! It was a blast to be playing outside in the sand with my sister. And boy were my calves sore the next day from barefoot running! When we got back to Sacramento last night, we went to my favorite spin class at my gym. And today–heading to the mountains for a weekend of skiing!

Hey Peach,
It sounds like you girls did HIIT training. HIIT is the best way to workout in my opinion. You can read more on it in my book, The Fire Within.
I own a fitness company in Santa Barbara, MOVFitness. Isn’t it great to workout on the beach here?
What types of workouts do you where you’re from?
We integrate boxing, sword fighting, and kettlebells into fun workouts. The next time you’re in town, let me know & I’ll give you & your sis a complimentary session.
