Beyond Recovery

You know, a full recovery isn’t just about eliminating eating disorder behaviors. Full, true recovery extends way beyond the realms of diet and exercise and into every element of your life.
One of the best qualities of recovery, in my experience, is having the belief and strength that I can be who I want to be, can do what I want to do.
In this spirit, I recently made a list of five things I want to accomplish in the next five years.
1) Read all the Shakespeare plays.
2) Learn to speak French. Fluently, this time!
3) Become a certified yoga teacher.
4) Take my little family to Europe.
5) Revisit horseback riding.
I made this list when I was pregnant, and when I told my mom (who typically supports me beyond 100%) she laughed and said, “Peach, you’re about to have a baby!”
I get her point. I’m pretty busy. Between feedings, diaper changes, and sleepless nights, I don’t have time for much else. But my passion for life, and for exploring the things I want to try, has not dwindled a bit since Victoria was born. The point isn’t really whether or not I accomplish these things in the next five years or not, but just that I keep dreaming, keep striving toward the things that excite me, keep believing in myself and maintaining a hunger not just to nourish my body, but to nourish my life.
When I got married to the man of my dreams, published a book, and had a baby all in the same year, my brother jokingly asked, “What are you going to do now that you’ve accomplished all your goals?” Keep dreaming, I guess, just keep moving forward.
