commitments

I have an exercise that I do with clients, and it goes a little something like this:
Write a list of commitments, things that you can truly marry yourself to seeing through, that will help you in your recovery. Write out the list, and post it somewhere special: in your journal, by your bedside, etc.
Simple enough, yes? A client recently shared with me an especially poignant set of commitments. She is one of those women who is so ready to face her demons and “walk through the fire,” as she says. With her permission, I’m sharing her commitments below.
Exercise Commitments
T.H.
7/24/09
I commit to a maximum of 5 days a week of exercise. (preferably 1 week day off and 1 weekend day off)
I commit to reaching out to my treatment team as soon as I start to feel amped with my exercise.
I commit to challenging myself by listening to my body in regards to pushing it past its limits.
I commit to more positive self talk about my body, realizing that it’s the vessel that carries around my amazing heart, soul and spirit.
I commit to reminding myself DAILY that what my body looks like does not define me as a person.
I commit to vulnerable, authentic honesty with my treatment team, especially my husband regardless of my fear of reaction.
I commit to challenging myself to walk through the fire of exercise compulsion, knowing that someday I WILL be free.
May I be at Peace,
May my heart remain open,
May I know the beauty of my own true nature,
May I be healed and May I be a source of healing to the world.
Thank you, T.H., for letting me share these so that they may inspire someone else to walk through the fire!
