not everyone likes me

No matter what we do, how hard we try to be the perfect person, not everyone is going to like us. In fact, some people will decidedly dislike us. So, we might as well be ourselves!

I had an interesting experience recently, where, after nine months of generous emails from women all over the country who read my book and wrote to tell me how it inspired & changed them, I received a note from a stranger calling me and my book all sorts of ugly, horrible names.

First reaction? Fear, shame, and an urgency to hide. Second reaction? Love, compassion, gratitude. Third reaction? Total permission to be myself.

No matter what we do. No matter how hard we try. Some people will not jibe with us, won’t get us, won’t appreciate us. That is okay. This experience has led me to feel such strong compassion for everyone who puts themselves out there in the world. All that effort we exert to try to be the perfect person…why not just be yourself?

So, to Britney Spears and every other celebrity who has so boldly been herself, and suffered a plethora of criticism for it…I have a new sense of compassion for you! And, respect.
